Privacy policy

Effective 3 October 2026 · Helvellyn Map 1.0.0
Android and iOS identifier: com.spatialterrain.helvellyn

Your walks stay on your device.

Helvellyn Map has no accounts, advertising, analytics or tracking identifiers. Spatial Terrain does not receive your location, recorded walks, imported routes, photographs or searches through the app. All maps and name searches work offline.

Who is responsible?

SPATIAL TERRAIN LIMITED publishes Helvellyn Map. We are registered in England and Wales (company number 17413034), with registered office at International House, 51 Borough High Street, London, SE1 1NB, United Kingdom. For support or privacy questions, email apps@spatialterrain.com.

Location and recording

If you choose the position control and grant location permission, GPS readings are used on this device to show your position and calculate distance, bearing and route progress. Browsing the map and importing files work without location permission.

If you start recording a walk, the app saves GPS coordinates, time, accuracy and available altitude, speed and course on this device. Recording continues while the screen is locked or you use another app, until you stop it. Android uses a foreground location service with a recording notification and Stop recording action. iOS uses location permission while the app is in use, with its background location capability and system location indicator. The operating system may interrupt recording. The app does not start a new recording without your action.

Precise location is needed for useful walking navigation and recordings. You can decline or revoke location permission in device settings. On Android, notification permission lets you see and stop recording from the notification; recording can still be stopped inside the app if notifications are declined.

Compass

If you enable the compass, the app uses device orientation readings to draw your heading on the map. iOS may ask for motion or orientation permission. These readings are used locally and are not sent to us.

Routes, photos and searches

You select the GPX route or photo to import through your device's file chooser. The app does not request access to your entire photo library, camera or microphone. A file provider you choose, such as your cloud storage provider, may download the selected file under its own terms.

Imported GPX routes and completed walks are stored in the app on this device. Selected photographs and their embedded GPS (EXIF) metadata are read locally to place a pin. Photo pins and image previews last for the current app session and are not uploaded. Search text, grid references and coordinates are processed locally.

If you explicitly share a GPX file, your chosen receiving app or recipient can receive the file, including its location history. Temporary GPX export copies may remain in the app's cache until removed by the app or operating system. Spatial Terrain receives no copy unless you choose to send one to us.

Deleting local information

Use Recorded walks to delete an individual walk, Clear GPX route to remove an imported route, or the menu's Delete local app data option to remove saved routes, walks, settings and session photo pins. Stop any active recording before deleting data. Uninstalling or clearing app storage also removes local app data, subject to your operating system's backup and restore settings. Device backups may include app data if enabled. We cannot access your device backups. Files you exported or shared elsewhere need to be deleted separately.

Support, feedback and this website

Feedback opens your email app. Nothing is sent until you choose to send an email. If you email us, we receive your email address and the message or attachments you send. We use these to respond to your request and improve the app, based on our legitimate interest in providing support. We keep support correspondence only as long as necessary to handle the request and meet applicable legal obligations. We do not sell it or use it for advertising.

If you open our support or privacy page in a browser, our hosting providers process ordinary web request information, such as IP address, browser details and the requested page, to deliver and protect the website. These pages have no analytics scripts, advertising or cookies added by Spatial Terrain. Email and hosting providers process information on our behalf. Their services may involve processing outside the UK with applicable safeguards. This website processing is separate from the app's offline map and GPS features.

Your choices and rights

You control device permissions, local data and what you share. For personal information you voluntarily send us, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict its use, and to object to processing, subject to applicable law. Contact apps@spatialterrain.com with a privacy request. We may need to verify your identity. You can also complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office.

Changes

If the app's data handling changes, we will update this policy and its effective date. The offline release described here does not include online place search, cloud synchronisation or automatic feedback uploads.
